Temporary learning spaces built for Lun Padidu CES after fire razed 11 classrooms; Save the Children initiates Catch Up Clubs to address learning gaps

On October 6, 2022, the people of Barangay Lun Padidu in Malapatan, Sarangani Province were jolted awake by the sound of sirens from speeding fire trucks. The Bureau of Fire Protection had reported a raging fire at Lun Padidu Central Elementary School, and eleven classrooms were quickly consumed, along with all the furniture, TVs, chairs, tables, and reading materials. In the face of this disaster, the community sprang into action, grabbing pails to put out the fire with water, showing the true spirit of Bayanihan. But despite their efforts, the damage was extensive, and the school's future hung in the balance. Thankfully, the Sarangani Division and the local government of Malapatan immediately took swift action to help the affected school, recognizing the importance of education for their community's children.  Various organizations and individuals stepped in to fill the gaps left by the fire, providing support to ensure that learning would not be disrupted. Despite the chall

DepEd, Smart brings e-learning to unenergized communities

Sitio Datal Basak may not always be visible in the eyes of the people in the flatlands, but it is never forgotten.   Cradled by the mountains of Maasim, Sarangani Province, and usually wrapped in thick mist, Sitio Datal Basak is home to a community of Blaans who rely on farming for their sustenance. Once sullied by the presence of a left-leaning organization, the establishment of the DepEd-run Datal Basak IP School and the road project, connected the once-isolated community to imminent progress.   Although it remains unenergized, the community relies on solar power to provide light at night. The solar power system donated to the school by its partners is an opportunity that the Schools Division of Sarangani took advantage of to realize one of its projects to help learners in last-mile schools. Beyond learning continuity At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Education in Sarangani has always had as one of its priorities the continuation of learning in the far-flung co

School restores colorful campus after being used as COVID-19 isolation facility

When the pandemic is over, the children of Barangay Small Margus in Glan, Sarangani Province will have an exciting school campus to go back to. The COVID-19 pandemic has turned the once colorful grounds of Nicomedes Tolentino Elementary School in Barangay Small Margus, municipality of Glan, Sarangani Province, into a bleak and grim sight after it was utilized as an isolation facility. The school campus became inaccessible to learners and teachers, leaving their classrooms, gardens, and parks unattended. Temporarily, the Barangay Council provided a small building for the school to use as an office and as a place to conduct their alternative learning delivery modalities. Instead of being discouraged by the absence of a school campus, the school principal, Corinna Falgui, saw an opportunity to document the school's existing practices, display the outputs in a make-shift showroom, and invite validators to assess their school-based management (SBM) level of practice. RD Farnazo lauds Sarangani's LR on WHEeLS project

“I can say that LR on WHEeLS is the best modality we can offer…at hindi magiging hadlang dito ang lokasyon…” Director Allan G. Farnazo, Director IV of DepEd Region XII  said, applauding the people behind the innovation. Upon learning about DepEd Sarangani's Learning Resources on WiFi Hub for Expanded e-Learning in Sarangani or  LR on WHEeLS project, Director Farnazo saw its potential and has been of supportive of it. According to him, LR on WHEeLS passed the yardstick that he has set for an innovation, which are: practical use, content, and interactivity. With an understanding of the geographical, cultural, and economic background of the province, the Schools Division of Sarangani came up with innovations that will enable learning to continue despite the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 Pandemic.   One of which is the LR on WHEeLS, which provides learners even the remotest communities of the province to experience e-Learning by providing them learning resources package

Lanao Kapanglao in the New Normal

Lanao Kapanglao Elementary School in Barangay Datal Bukay, Glan, Sarangani Province is one of the farthest and hardest-to-reach schools in the Division of Sarangani.   Getting there usually requires a day of trekking. Road improvements have only been done recently, which allows motorcycles to reach the place. Photo courtesy of Lanao Kapanglao ES Facebook Page In the new normal, movement restrictions have made it even more difficult to reach the learners. As the newly designated Teacher-in-charge at Lanao Kapanglao, Jekelenn Quirobin recognizes the logistical challenges of the sitio. "I am devoted to help those children and people residing at Lanao Kapanglao in our little ways, together with my colleagues," Quirobin said. The deployment of learning support aides (LSAs) has given the school an opportunity to check on the progress of the learners in answering their modules. Reggie Sadaya, who used to be a security guard at a fishing company, now serves as one of the LSAs at Lana
